Sound Portal

Sound Portal is an immersive sound space that uses
wind to play strings within a wooden resonating
chamber while simultaneously cooling inhabitants.

Phenomena
WIND can be used as a medium to feel an experience
and ENTROPY brings us awareness to our
surroundings to be more conscious about our actions.
The purpose of the PROGRAM is for people to dim their
visual senses and instead feel and hear sound, absorb
what living is like, and to exist in a meditative space.
Perfect for abled and disabled people, no matter if
youre blind or deaf, we can all have an experience with
the sound.
Wind is caused by uneven heating of the earth’s
surface by the sun (irregular surface, revolution).
Warm air is less dense than cold air, leaving it to rise
while cooler air sinks.

Research/Precedents
Don’t try to control wind…. Use and embrace it!
It is unpredictable and that is the joy in it.
The Aeolian Harp uses strings to make sound. As air
passes over the strings, it creates vortices that alternate
sides, pushing the string back and forth and creating
vibration. This precedent gets its name from the Greek
god of wind “Aeolus” because wind instruments are
played not by human hands but by higher powers.

Program / User Experience

1) Enter: Beginning of music and wind
2) Middle: There is space to sit and the
music is amplified
3) Exit: Return to reality… the hot summer
User Analysis: Middle School girls gather to
talk in the middle, Children run around and
are all over the tunnel,
Runners and Pedestrians walking through
the tunnel, Elderly are walking by and find
rest on the benches

The park/walk area here where the venturi can be placed
strategically to be at the same direction as the wind.
It should be in an area where people usually walk pass but
doesn’t interfere the circulation flow.

Experiments

Larger air cavities generally amplify lower frequencies and produce fuller, louder sounds,
while smaller spaces emphasize higher frequencies. The 2ft cavity acts as a larger, more
efficient, and deeper resonator for guitar strings.

Global form:
Accessible from all sides, for all people. Doesn’t both or interfere with runners. Non intrusive/breaks the sound
waves. Internally has seat for people to interact with each other and a seat for solo admiration.
Material Process:
The best interior materials for amplifying musical vibrations for deaf individuals are high-density, resonant materi-
als like plywood, hardwood flooring, and metal, which efficiently transmit bass frequencies.
Luan Plywood:
Luan is famously known for its ability to bend, which is crucial for forming large tunnels or curved soundboards.
Plywood soundboards can produce a “bolder and a bit louder” sound compared to solid wood, often making them
suitable for instruments where high volume is desired over complex timbre.

Program is for anyone,
even blind people. It is
encouraged to close
your eyes in the center
and feel the environ-
ment in the meditative
space.
