Maze Cube

As you step into Maze Cube , the mirrors reflect every angle of you, revealing your entire self without concealment. What you see is not just yourself but countless overlapping images of you. In this “maze” of mirrors, every step is a rediscovery of yourself, and every reflection reveals your deep connection with the environment, allowing you to experience the interaction and fusion between yourself and the world through exploration.

Refraction of Light

When sunlight (or another light source) enters the water, it changes direction because water and air have different refractive indices. This bending of light is called refraction.

From this experiment, I discovered that each mirror presents a different image, yet from a single viewpoint, you can still see the entire object. This shows how reflections vary based on angles and mirror shapes while preserving the overall perception of the object’s full appearance.

Precedent

Japanese artist Nobuhiro Nakanishi created a series of three-dimensional acrylic artworks, where he prints continuous landscape photographs onto transparent acrylic panels and arranges these panels with tiny gaps between them, creating a layered effect. When viewed from different angles, the audience experiences the flow of time and space, as if immersed in a gradually changing natural landscape.

Plan/Elevations

Site Analyisis

Located at Pier 63, my installation needs to be positioned in a spot that receives ample sunlight, as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. To ensure optimal exposure, I must carefully choose a location where natural light can illuminate the structure throughout the day, enhancing both its visibility and interaction with the environment.

Audience/Interior Space

My audience can be anyone. By exploring mirror reflections, they can find a link between themselves, space, and natural light. This journey helps them see how their image changes with the surroundings and light, leading to a better understanding of themselves and their place in the world.

Material Use

Coloured Acrylic Rod

High Light Transmission: Coloured cellophane sheets have a high light transmittance, allowing light to pass through and enter the material. Material Stability: Coloured cellophane sheets often have good UV resistance and weather durability, allowing them to maintain light transmission properties over time, even under varying environmental conditions.

Lightweight and Easy Installation

High Safety: Made from quality PVC or acrylic materials, they are waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and shatterproof, reducing the risk associated with glass mirrors.Cost-Effective: Generally more affordable than traditional mirrors, making them suitable for budget-conscious users.
