MICRO-HOUSING: THE ELDERLY WHEELCHAIR USER

The Medium1 Unit is designed to connect private accessible spaces with areas that encourage social interaction for elderly users. It incorporates smart home features like voice activated controls (doors), clerestories & niched railing, to help support the user’s mobile independence and personal relationships.

Addressing The Issue: Cross Negligence

In recent years, creating accessible design has become an afterthought to space-planning. It has opened the door, for inaccessible design to come forefront as the standard. It’s not an unknown fact that inaccessible design creates barriers for disabled individuals. It perpetuates inequality and excludes them heavily within society. Disabled elderly individuals are often left neglected from accessing public and personal spaces for social gathering because of neglectful design choices.

Many spaces may be “wheelchair accessible” but don’t necessarily make life easier for the user. Some
deal breakers include:

  • Poor lighting and technology
  • Narrow Paths or Doorways
  • Limited Assisted Elements (lack of grab rails or automated doors)
  • Limited Turning Radial Space for Wheelchairs
  • Unreachable Fixtures: High Cabinets, Light switches, Appliances
  • Uneven Floors (Harsh Material Changes)

Setting Up Accommodation Values & Goals

This negligence was enough motivation for me to help design a space specifically for this user. The main consideration throughout the whole planning process, was to make sure every decision surrounds the needs of the user. There were many goals that needed to be considered. Which included, but are not limited to:

  • Niched Handrails
  • Clear Pathways, Exits & Entrances
  • Extra Turning Radius Space
  • Voice Activating lighting and technology
  • Roll-in Showers & Reachable Storage
  • Calming and Inviting elements

Diagramming & Space-Planning

The leading force behind the design was incorporating a niched-handrailing system throughout the entire space. This railing not only highlights the user’s needs but allows them to become more independent. It became more than just extra help around the space but a statement.

The Medium1 Unit is designed to connect private accessible spaces with areas that encourage social interaction. It incorporates smart home features like voice activated controls doors, clerestories & niched railing, to help support the user’s mobile independence and personal relationships.

It was important to the design process to stay true to preserving extra space for the user and making sure the niched-handrailing element carried throughout the space. After solidifying the plans, next was rendering the space to truly express every decision.

Renderings

Entry & Self-Care

The user is first met with the niched-handrailing and a place for their keys. They have the option for engaging in personal care or continue to the entertainment area.

The natural sunlight introduces warmth from the clerestory & onto the niched-handrail detailing. The niched-handrail flows into a roll-in shower. The rail provides help with mobility & extra storage for toiletries. It also prioritizes to the user’s privacy and independence.

Entertainment & Cooking

The openness of the entertainment space provides accessibility and comfort. There is a custom kitchenette for the user. Every item or shelf is within usable distance and includes plenty of space for potential caretakers to help with home-cooked meals. The space infuses controlled independence and promotes socializing for its elderly users.

Resting & Details

The resting area introduces sunlight with its large windows and a view of the New York City skyline. This is a place to rest and possibly cozy up with a favorite book!

Thank you for taking the time to explore this project, focused on wheelchair accessibility. This project has become an important topic to help raise awareness for the need of inclusive design. Hopefully, creating environments that promote independence, and equal opportunities can become the standard behind interior design & architecture!
