El Jardín on 7th: Migrant Housing

Mission Statement:

Our goal is to design a secure living environment that creates opportunity while embracing migrants’ culture through the fostering of a multi-generational community.

General Program:

The Roof will be used to create a garden space with greenhouses that will contribute to the rainwater collection system used throughout the entirety of the building which the building irrigation systems with be dependent on. Additionally, there will be solar panels that will be utilized to optimize the energy efficiency of the building as a whole.

On the three floors below that there will be a daycare center that
will not only allow many migrants to get jobs but also further
enrich the tight-knit community living experience.

Rainwater Collection

We will use distributed treated grey water in combination with green roof rainwater collection for irrigation

The collected water goes into the main exposed piping system in the middle of the Atrim and are divided
into 3 colors coordinating with each of the 3 floor communities

3 Floor Community

We will be creating a community of three floors including communal spaces will revolve around food as the majority of migrants that seek asylum will have many cultural foods that will be vital to their comfortability and sense of community.

La Plaza

The top floor will be the acting community center. This space will be multiuse including a garden space, dance floor, tables, and chair that will allow for all sorts of cultural expression.

    La Cocina

The middle floor will be the kitchen, intentionally placed in the middle of the other communal spaces as to create a connection to each of the floors with two sets of staircases. Specifically, with multigenerational families there will be a major need for kitchen and dining spaces that feel homey and inviting.

    La Hacienda

The bottom floor will be the farm. The entire building will be dependent on a system of hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics, and traditional farming. There will be an atrium cutting through the center to mitigate the humidity that our farming/irrigation systems might create
