The Chrysalis

The Chrysalis is a chair that is made to promote people to transform their chair into a cocoon out of spare cardboard.

The Goal for this chair I wanted to Make a sustainable chair for long-term using Origami Techniques to create a compact design that lets you sink in the chair

Why Is it called The Chrysalis?

Origami has the ability to transform into anything depending on how you fold it. this could help with small spaces and clever folding techniques to make compact complex shapes.

After talking to SVA Students about how long Their previous chairs lasted, I wanted to combine that idea with making use of scrap cardboard that people have lying around their house for sustainability. I wanted to be able to slot any shape or size into the chair so the slotting will be accessible and easy for everyone. This makes every chair unique by using their lifestyles as cushioning making the chair more and more comfortable with each slot, Building Your own Cocoon. Sinking you in as you get drawn into your work.

Slotting Cardboard on to the Chair
The Rag Chair was a big Inspiration to me as I wanted a chair unique to every customer doubled with the sustainability aspect of it.

Sketches

The Chrysalis is sold detached from the frame. The goal is to make the frame outlast the seat so when the seat gives out You could buy a new one separate from the frame.
