Saddle Chair

Saddle Chair promotes spinal alignment using folded, slotted double-wall cardboard for a stable, lightweight, and packable design inspired by horse-riding.

CONCEPT

What is the purpose of the saddle chair?

Designed to have even weight distribution across the hips and thighs, reducing the strain on the back muscles. A saddle chair promotes a natural, upright posture by tilting the pelvis forward and aligning the spine in a neutral position. This alleviates strain experienced on the lower back and neck, which can be caused by slouching.

RESEARCH

Sitting is the new smoking in modern society.

The saddle chair addresses these concerns. It reduces back pain, elevates core engagement, and substantially improves mobility and posture.

“Humans are built to stand upright. Your heart and cardiovascular system work more effectively that way. Your bowel also functions more efficiently when you are upright.”

“Sitting in a chair has a higher chance of being overweight, developing diabetes or heart disease, and experiencing depression and anxiety.”

PRECEDENTS

Why the hyperbolic paraboloid?

In order to address exceptional stiffness from the density of lines and stable sitting structure, I aim to construct a hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped seating surface by weaving a continuous straight line through two intersecting families of straight lines. This design provides comfort when people sit with their legs aligned along the coordinate lines.

What is the precedence you used and what you learned from them?

Frei Otto, Architect, and structural engineer pioneered the concept of “form-finding”, and experimented with stable structures. His famous Olympic stadium is based on his experiments with soap films. A radically simple design premise—creating an architecture guided by resource conservation, structural intelligence, and construction efficiency. By using the mathematics of his architecture, I learned that structural stability is a fundamental property of a dynamical system.

MATERIAL MANIPULATION

What is the Material and Manipulation for a Saddle Chair?

For materials, I used double-layer cardboard. Folding manipulation to engage all cardboard for a packable and shippable design, and Slotting allows diamond honeycomb interlocking cores to create a lightweight and stable structure. When people sit on the chair, it carries a great load like human weight

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

What did you learn from the first trial and how did they lead you down this design path?

7”x 4.5” to 3”x3” Diamond honeycombs

Realized density is an important factor in increasing sturdiness from compacted size and dense diamond honeycomb.

Rectangle to Square

A square creates equal tolerance when the weight is applied so that it is more stable to hold the compression than a rectangle.

Durability of cardboard

Assembled by double-layer cardboard is stronger than single-layer cardboard.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Why do saddle chair’s value product performance?

Seat Height: 18”

Seat Depth: 15”-18”

Chair Height: 30”

Back Angle: N/A

According to ergonomics, the planned seat height is 18 inches, the seat depth is 15-18 inches, and the back angle starts at 90 degrees.

It allows Sitting in both directions for multifunction while reading, conversing, writing, and browsing. It is appealing to people of all ages and genders, and it is small, allowing for easier access to chairs. shipping/packaging makes them flat together, separating all of the single cardboard easy to deconstruct and reassemble using slotting.

According to the floor layout, all of the single cardboard readily built by slotting may be detached. It may also be sent flat and then stretched back to its original chair configuration. It is cost-effective to use recycled double-layer cardboard.
